In general, CYRWIN supports only the switching of the _keyboard_ from
the English into Russian mode. To see the Russian text, You also have to
install several Russian fonts (You can even install them without CYRWIN,
but You'll be able only to see the Russian text, not to edit it).
There are three basic types of the Russian fonts encoding:
- DOS (ALT, or 866) --- used in TEX on PC;
- WINDOWS (8251) --- uses the standard MS- Windows encoding for foreign fonts;
- KOI-8 --- mostly used on VAX, UNIX and in the Internet.
As far as I remember, the CYRWIN distributive includes only the fonts
with the Russian Windows encoding (and the keyboard layout to edit them).
You have to get the fonts in the DOS and KOI-8 format seperately.
Just for Your convenience, I would like to send 3 files with the uuencoded
and pkzipped DOS and KOI-8 fonts. In the case You don't like them You can
take a whole lot of them at ftp://ftp.kiae.su/windows/fonts/cyrillic.
Also, I send a separate file with the CYRWIN keyboard layouts for DOS
and KOI-8.
The sequence of the installation of CYRWIN can be as follows.
- Run Cyrwin setup; install everything. The default setup is quite
convenient; maybe, the only thing to change is to uncheck loading of the
CYRWIN on each start of Windows (the icon of CYRWIN will still be shown
in the Program Manager, and can be always run from there).
- With CYRWIN not loaded, go to the \Windows directory. There will be
a lot of files with the extension .kbd . Each of them represents a layout of
the keyboard. Delete all of them which You'll not use (German, Norwegian, etc).
Copy the new keyboards from the file kbds.zip, which I sent to You.
- This is not the whole story. You have to copy the fonts
(*.ttf -files) from the other received files to the directory \Windows\SYSTEM.
Now in the Program manager choose Control Panel/Fonts and click on "Add".
Choose the directory "\Windows\System" and add all the fonts with the names
like "ER Bukinist", "ER Kurier". After that You'll be able to use them
in Your applications.
- The Russian homepages are usually written in KOI-8 format. You can choose
the type of the font in the Netscape
(the menu Options/General prefernces/ Fonts).
Choose "ER Kurier KOI-8" as the proportional and the fixed font, for instance.
If You download another fonts from somewhere, You can try to experiment with
the appearance of the Netscape window under the choice of various fonts.
