The Division of Theoretical Physics was founded in 1965 by A.A. Logunov as a part of the major Soviet/Russian accelerator and high energy physics center, the Institute for High Energy Physics located in Protvino, Moscow region, Russia.
Scientists of the Division perform research on the following basic fields:
- High energy physics and particle physics
- Problems and methods of quantum and classical field theory
- Classical and quantum gravity. Cosmology
- Mathematical physics
- Participation in planning experiments, data analysis and interpretation
The Division of Theoretical Physics hosts visitors from other Russian centers, from Bielorussia, Ukraine, as well as from Western institutes.
Seminars of the DTP are usually held on Tuesday from 15:00 until 16:00 and followed by informal discussions with tea and coffee.
Since 1970's the Division has been carried out regular international workshops on actual problems of high energy physics. Proceedings of these workshops for 1996 , 1997 , 1998 , 1999 , 2000 , 2001 , 2002 , 2003 , 2004 , 2005 years can be found on the site of the Central Scientific and Technical Library of IHEP.
The VIII-th Workshop EDS-99 from series "Blois Workshops": "International Conference on Elastic and Diffractive Scattering" was held at the Division of Theoretical Physics in 1999.
Under the initiative and with active participation of the Division of Theoretical Physics international workshops on results from the Large Hadron Collider were organized and successfuly carried out: "First Results from the LHC and Their Physical Interpretation" (October 2010) and "LHC on the March" (November 2011).
On December 9, 2010, in the Division of Theoretical Physics a mini-workshop "Many Faced Quanta" dedicated to the memory of O. A. Khrustalev took place.
In January of 2011 the Division of Theoretical Physics hosted the International Seminar "Classical and Quantum Integrable Systems - 2011".
In July of 2018 the Division of Theoretical Physics hosted the International Seminar "Classical and Quantum Integrable Systems - 2018".
